Bridging the Gap: Open Networking from Data Center to Campus Edge - Markus Kittenberger, FH Technikum Wien & S Kamran Naqvi, Broadcom
Thursday September 19, 2024 09:35 - 10:00 CEST
TBA
The FH Technikum Wien is a large University of applied sciences in Vienna Austria with over 4700 students enrolled in 34 Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programs. The University embarked on the Open Networking journey in 2020 with Open Networking hardware and open-source network operating system, SONiC in the Data Centre. With the success of this deployment, FHTW decided to take the next step and replace their Campus core and edge switching from traditional OEM based solution to Open Networking with Open-Source Network Operating System SONiC. This presentation aims to highlight reasons for moving away from a traditional three-tiered Architecture and adopting a modern VXLAN EVPN Fabric based Campus Architecture. Presenters from FHTW and Broadcom will also talk about University’s new Campus Core and Edge Architecture, role of network automation, FHTW’s approach to secure access control & monitoring and how Broadcom’s contributions to SONiC and SAI enabled this.

Leveraging OpenLAN Cloud-Managed Switches with Open-Source SONiC - Taras Chornyi, PLVision
Thursday September 19, 2024 10:00 - 10:25 CEST
TBA
The adoption of SONiC and open hardware platforms has traditionally been concentrated in data centers. However, there is now a growing interest in deploying these solutions in diverse edge applications, campus environments, and smaller vertical deployments. This shift is driven by several key factors:

Standardization efforts led by the OpenLAN Switching community, enabling cloud management and Zero Touch Provisioning (ZTP) over the public internet.

The emergence of open-source SONiC-based solutions, offering greater flexibility and customization.

Introduction of new multi-gigabit Power over Ethernet (PoE) platforms leveraging optimized switch silicon with embedded host CPUs.

Availability of pure-play cloud management solutions capable of managing multi-vendor environments through unified management interfaces, often in collaboration with proactive system integrators.

During this presentation, we will explore and demonstrate an OpenLAN Switching solution running on optimized switch silicon from Marvell Semiconductor, controlled and managed through a cloud-based platform.

Better Together: SONiC-OpenDaylight Synergy Boosts Connectivity - Miroslav Mikluš, Pantheon
Thursday September 19, 2024 10:45 - 11:10 CEST
TBA
In a world increasingly driven by phenomena, such as AI, it is easy to forget the importance of network reliability and throughput. The fundamental need for robust connectivity has always been present and remains a cornerstone of our digital infrastructure. SONiC, an efficient data and control plane, and OpenDaylight, as a powerful and flexible management plane, can work together to significantly enhance network reliability and speed. OpenDaylight's centralized control allows for dynamic network management and policy enforcement, providing real-time insights and automated responses to network conditions. Meanwhile, SONiC, with its modular and containerized architecture, ensures high-performance packet processing and robust data plane operations. The integration of these two systems enables seamless coordination between management, control and data planes, resulting in improved network performance, reduced latency, and enhanced fault tolerance through proactive management and rapid recovery from issues.

Open-Source Configuration and Monitoring Tools for SONiC - Monsoon and AI-Enhanced ORCA - Kamal Bhatt, STORDIS
Thursday September 19, 2024 11:10 - 11:35 CEST
TBA
STORDIS is redefining the networking landscape through its pioneering use of open-source technologies with SONiC, Monsoon, and AI-enhanced ORCA.
Monsoon is an opensource monitoring tool for SONiC has been there since 2022, Monsoon uses Prometheus and Grafana for data collection and visualization. Apart from using 'node_exporter' (standard data collector for prometheus client) Monsoon uses sonic-exporter to fetch data from SONiC DB to Prometheus and Grafana.

ORCA focuses on orchestration and configuration of SONiC switches, ORCA provides a user-friendly interface for managing and configuring SONiC devices. ORCA is built on top of gNMI and uses a Neo4j graph database to store network topology. ORCA is designed to be scalable and extensible, and it can be used to manage large and complex SONiC networks. It is easy to install and use, and it provides a comprehensive set of features for managing SONiC devices. ORCA is a valuable resource for the SONiC community, is constantly being improved and expanded.

Driving Performance: SONiC enables efficient AI Networking - S Kamran Naqvi, Broadcom
Thursday September 19, 2024 11:35 - 12:00 CEST
TBA
An unprecedented growth in Large Language Models has created a demand for massive AI workloads, comprising tens of thousands of GPUs. An efficient and scalable Network is, therefore, at the heart of an efficient AI infrastructure to allow interworking of these GPUs as a unified computing system. But networking requirements for AI workloads are quite different from standard cloud computing infrastructures. In this presentation, we will explain the unique requirements for AI Networking and how efficient Scheduled Fabric running SONiC can meet these requirements and drive performance for AI infrastructure.

SRv6 uSID Support in SONiC - Ahmed Abdelsalam, Cisco
Thursday September 19, 2024 12:00 - 12:25 CEST
TBA
SRv6 uSID provides a unified solution to deliver any kind of service (VPN, TE, FRR, NFV) end-to-end across the various network segments (Core, Metro, DC, NFV, Cloud, Host). It leverages the IPv6 dataplane to deliver services without the need for any shim layer.

SRv6 has more than 10 IETF RFCs standardizing the different building blocks of the solution including architecture, dataplane, control plane, operations, and management. It enjoys a very rich ecosystem that includes majority of network vendors, merchant silicon and open source.

SRv6 uSID is supported in SONiC as a collaboration between several OCP/SONiC ecosystem members including Alibaba, Cisco, Broadcom and Intel. The SONiC Routing WG has been created to discuss SRv6 features among other routing features.

At the 4th Networking Open Source Tech Conference in Beijing, the PhoenixWing initiative has been launched with the goal to strengthen the SRv6 support in SONiC. The initiative has been endorsed by the Linux Foundation, Alibaba, Cisco, Broadcom, and Microsoft.

SRv6 uSID in SONIC has been deployed in production at Alibaba.

In this presentation we provide an overview of SRv6 and the support in SAI/SONiC/FRR.
